Tips for a Teeth Healthy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a time of family, friends, and food. Unfortunately, it's also a time of cavities. People tend to snack throughout the day on Thanksgiving, and that snacking can lead to cavities if you're not careful. Here are some helpful tips for avoiding cavities this Thanksgiving.

Brush and Floss Regularly

As you prepare for Thanksgiving, you should also be preparing your teeth for the feast to come. Make sure you're brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and taking proper care of your toothbrush by cleaning it thoroughly with antibacterial mouthwash or hydrogen peroxide. You should also floss at least once a day to remove any leftover food particles between teeth.

Avoid Sugary and Sticky Foods

Thanksgiving is a time of celebration, but don't let the holiday festivities wreak havoc on your smile! While you may be tempted to indulge in sugary or sticky foods this holiday, doing so can increase your chances of tooth decay and cavities. We encourage our patients to avoid these types of foods and stick to healthier alternatives to keep their smile healthy and clean. If you can't resist indulging in a few sweet treats, we recommend limiting yourself to only a few a day, rinsing with water afterwards, and brushing your teeth afterward as well. Additionally, as tempting as it may be to snack throughout the day, it's best to stick to three meals a day if possible. This helps keep food from sitting on your teeth and causing decay. It also helps reduce the amount of acid that flows over your teeth which can also contribute to tooth decay. If you must snack during the day, try snacking on healthier options such as fruits, veggies, or cheese instead of candy or chips.

Drink Lots of Water

Thanksgiving is a time to feast and indulge, but it's important to keep your body hydrated throughout the day. Doing so can help prevent tooth decay from dry mouth, which can result from dehydration. Carry around a bottle of water with you or drink a glass before you eat to help rehydrate your body.

Water can also help with washing down your Thanksgiving dinner so you can avoid too much sugar. If you eat a meal that is high in sugar, drink water to rinse it down and avoid letting your teeth soak in the sugar for too long. This will also help to prevent cavities.

Drinking water can also fill you up, so you don't overeat. When you feel full, you're less likely to snack between meals. This is important for maintaining good oral hygiene, as eating too many snacks in between meals can make it more difficult to properly clean your teeth after meals.

The amount of water you need to consume each day varies by person, so ask your family dentist about how much you should be drinking on a normal day and at a holiday party like Thanksgiving. They can help you figure out the amount of water you should be consuming in order to stay hydrated and healthy.

Use Your Dental Benefits

Before your big family gathering, remember to make the most of your annual dental insurance benefits. Regular checkups and cleanings are essential for optimal oral health and can help keep your smile looking and feeling great for years to come. Plus, you can use these visits as an opportunity to address any concerns you might have about your teeth or oral health. By coming in for your visit before Thanksgiving, you can ensure you're prepared to eat all the food you love without worrying about injuring your mouth.

Not only is it important to see your dentist before the holidays, but it's important to see them regularly throughout the year. Why? Because only a professional can examine your mouth for signs of tooth decay or gum disease. And they will be able to spot any potential problems early on, which means you can get in and get out with any needed treatments. Prevention is key!
